There are no Business Intelligence (BI) solutions available on the market that can optimally support Decision Support Systems – Management Information Systems. Current solutions create more information mess then making true business value add. Strategic decision makers will get huge amount of unified Key Performance Indicators but they will not be INTEGRATED and this will cause decision problems. It will be of great help for business (non financial) side in company. Point is to apply solution that can handle requests and queries with many dimensions, that can work with “super cubes”. Many solutions are limited on up to 25 dimensions and this is far inadequate for complex ad hoc analysis. Not supporting super cubes means instead of creating one cube users have to create many cubes for analysis without possibility to drill down between cubes. It is a serious analysis problem. Best of the breed on the market is SyBase which handles “unlimited” number of dimensions. If SyBase is too costly consider other solutions like Microsoft Analysis Services. Microsoft does not support unlimited number of dimensions and calculations but works very smoothly and elegantly.
2. Apply data mining solution that has many advanced data mining features and possibilities in finding hidden marketing trends and patterns. Best of the breed on the market are SAS solutions. They have far more best developed business insight into behind business figures. It will bring many beneficial data.
3. Implement specialized software solutions for additional marketing or financial analysis. For example companies very often need ABC analysis. Best solution has SAS with specialized ABC module.
4. For Business Performance Management, Business Intelligence for Finance and Controlling apply Hyperion solution (according to Gartner’s magic quadrant and personal experience). It is far best solution on the market. Financial and Controlling side is essential among other tools in order to get very detailed view into financial statements like Balance Sheets, Profit and Loss Statements, Cash Flow and similar. Catch is to have view into many kind of derivates of corporate financial statements. Derivates for PLs means to have PL’s per sales channels, customer segmentations, customers, organizational units, products and similar. Hyperion does not support super cubes but has bigger dimensional cubes then competition.
5. Make integration of all named tools and their exported data into one platform. In other words apply Total Controlling Concept and make only one reporting super platform to prevent information clutter. Total Controlling Concept will also allow integration with non structured company knowledge and real time simulations, business impacts of any kind of strategic decision.
