There is no life beyond controlling

Controlling by its definition prepares accounting data for management in understandable form. It is also called management reporting.

Basic controlling tasks are planning (strategic, budgeting, mid term planning, forecasting), reporting (cost reporting, revenue reporting, financial statements, financial ratios, financial derivations, Key Performance Indicators reporting), business analysis, methodology (data definitions), preparation of business cases, performance measurement, product or service profit calculation, benchmarking, and active participation with leading role in many projects of vital importance for company. To cut the story, controlling is right hand for management and their reference data flow interface. Controlling importance is very high and growing with time. In many companies Finance is turning more into Controlling and classical role of finance like accounting are more and more outsourced. For example Deutsch Telekom in newest organization has more then 10 different controlling departments on different levels. It is more then 65% of financial departments.

Controlling needs specialized solutions in order to handle all mentioned activities. They are called Business Performance Management. If business performance management can not fully cover all financial and controlling needs and that is planning, reporting, analysis (business cases), additional solutions like  Financial and Controlling Business Intelligence are being used like Activity Based Costing, Profitability analysis and many other financial systems reporting solutions.

Controlling with specialized tools, knowledge of finance and business logic (at least in aggregated form) is ideal place to make necessary knowledge mix, financial and non financial, that fully cover management view into company performance. Sometimes it is the main management monitor into company.

To conclude, with more and more complex situation within company with many information systems and with very unstable marketing environment controlling importance is becoming essential.
