Business Intelligence Expectations

What should be expected from each business intelligence tool. There are 2 basic tasks expected from business intelligence tools.

Give me information that will give me transparent view of what is going on in company.

Give me additional knowledge that will give me competitive advantage.

First task is mostly achievable for business intelligence solutions but can fail during implementation or during operation. Why BI fails and where are BI problems are already described in several posts. Second task is expected especially by senior management but BI can not achieve it. Can not achieve it with current model that is configured for first task. This is business intelligence curse. Business intelligence solutions are not designed for task number 2 but for task number 1, give me information that will give me transparent view of what is going on in company.

Competitive advantage searched in business intelligence task number 2 could be for example finding out which products in preparation phase will bring most impact on EVA. Business case will give just rough estimation. Rough estimation could lead to big error. Too big error in calculation and planning phase now means product fail in future. Every product needs fine tuning prediction tool with cirugic precision in prediction.
