Dashboards are Combs

Dashboards are statical and provide information like combs. Management need statical reports as initial information, similar to tops of comb needles. But next step in management reporting is to search for additional data, through other views, different dimensions, over same set of data. Management can always recive a lot of additional data and very quickly if data are nested within same business intelligence solution. One cone on picture below. But each bigger company has many business intelligence solutions used in reporting and planning purposes.

Management can ask for support of strategic decions for combination of aggregated and detailed data (financial and non financial) in form of additional report or very often in a form of business case. Strategic decisions are always based upon larger data sets that business intelligence solutions can provide. Providing data in sense of quick, integrated and consolidated performacne indicator report reply. 

Business intelligence solution faces problem since datamarts which are beneath ech cone as shown on figure below act like individual islands, data islands if they are not strongly integrated. If they were strongly integrated they would be placed in same data mart and same business intelligence solution upon. This is the main curse of business intelligence solutions, to lay upon data islands and not having one solid and strong integrated data mart. Once again, data being in data warehouse does not mean to be integrated but only to be unified.
