What comes after implementation of Business Intelligence Project?

In fairy tales it goes something like… “They married and lived happily ever after”.

So, when Business Intelligence project is implemented troubles are gone. Isn’t this expectation utopia?

No, problems that will appear after implementation are bigger and tougher to conquer. Real business intelligence life is same like human life. After marriage come troubles, daily fighting, kids, their growth and etc. This is just beginning of long fight. Implementation is just start of troubles because company is becoming more aware of information and knowledge potential. Before implementation company was not either not developed enough to start with it.

Project has much lighter task to fulfil. Project just needs to show that it works “somehow”, it has to show short term living functionality. Behind can be even Potemkin’s village. It is easy to camouflage wrong concepts, modelling, structure and to show certain working capabilities. Behind the scene can be manual work of many experts, non transparent processes, and etc. Project leader can be aware of upfront problems and can run on other projects. For its defence can always claim he delivered something that worked.

Yeah, worked for several months and then collapsed.

If Business Intelligence project is not based on solid ground but on sand it will fail soon after launch or will require new project to fix old problems. Additional new project need can be camouflaged with following reasons: business environment changed, process changed or production systems changed significantly. It is easy to hide false moves. 

Surviving for longer period of time in production environment is best proof and measure of how business intelligence project was made. BI has to grow naturally and survive in cruel knowledge generation world.
