Experience and knowledge of one Information System

Recently I’ve realised other side of knowledge of IT experts and managers that worked only on one information system.

Here is what happened…

They were in position of power and asked and forced for additional data. OK, it can be done but we need time and money because we really have complex company information landscape. Getting additional information is not a trivial stuff. Bigger and older organization plus dynamic market is a guarantee of highly complex information systems.

But, they were persistent… No you have to deliver data in a month. That’s it, otherwise we will send penalty.

Furthermore, in following negotiations I’ve realized one surprisingly weird fact. They underestimated same information complexity (environment) as in their domestic production system.

Beside they worked on information system, only one, their knowledge and prejudices were same as of those who were not IT experts at all. They shared same lack of knowledge.

They did not understand problems with data flows, processes to ensure data quality and information details… they were very shallow with their knowledge. IT expertise in one field is no guarantee of good understanding of reporting and analysis information flows.
