With whom to work
Have you ever been in situation to believe in almost impossible promises. Nice guys in expensive outfit sell story in perfect presentations. Who would not like to work with them?
On the other hand there are introverted IT experts that do not sell stories, look outdated not so nice and speak only in non understandable IT language. Who would like to work with them?
Personally, I do like to work only with people that finish jobs, and that are quick thinkers for business logic and are willing to improvise and to collaborate. Doesn’t matter do they sell stories like first group or that look like tech gurus. Ability of getting things done, measuring past projects and jobs, should be main measure in choosing team members for Business Intelligence projects.
Certificates, education and reference lists are not guaranties that business intelligence projects will be done.
Direct testimonials of people whom we know, have our trust and that have high competency in field that is in the scope of project, are something totally different.

I’m sure almost everybody would agree that the direct testimonials would mean much more, that’s when you’re on the “buying side”, so to speak.
Now, when you’re on the “selling side”, let’s say you’re that IT expert who does get things done, would you just rely on the word of the mouth to promote yourself? Why can’t you also be a “nice guys in expensive outfit”?

I hope I did not cause wrong understanding with this post, but I’ve worked with great guys in expensive outfit. It definitely helps for selling side and gives respects to counterparts and that is great.
I totally agree with you that selling side can’t relay only on “word of the mouth”… I would definitely go for published finished and working projects as references for example like Blog, for networking (social) capital and off course nice outfit as selling enhancer.
