Redundant and Over Customized Business Intelligence Reporting
At the beginning of the project many reports are required by users. They prepare specifications, list of wishes, explanations, descriptions, even business cases to justify their influence on company profitability. It is almost always huge amount of requests.
All the business intelligence requests are made from users perspective and from what they know best, from the perspective of functionalities of table calculators. Those requests are very rarely checked and consolidated from decision or business intelligence experts. It is more like un-structured bunch of reporting requirements.
There are actually two things that can happen with un-structured and non-consolidated reporting requirements: there can be redundant reports and over customized reports.
IT in the phase of development might recognize how similar requested reports are in sense of structure or functionality. It means to have only one dimension, measure, attribute or metrics different from the other requested report. Actually, many times three or more reports might be made as one but just with slight addition in filter of report. But this is something that is tough for users to recognize if they are not skilled with pivot table functionality. If they are just tough old administrative they will not recognize that they actually asked for same report but made in different way. Business Intelligence platform is excellent solution to eliminate all redundant and unnecessary reports from reporting processes. This is an example of redundant reports because many times customers ask for reports that could be easily derivate from reports but not as separate reporting model as initially requested.
Dare to admit to bosses you’ve asked for redundant reports…
Over Customized Reports
During the time customers who asked for reports did not realize how they asked something what should not be included in information systems. Many time this are information from table calculators and that are with “business value”. Not all data from “sticky notes” need to be in Information System. Do not force business intelligence solution to be Excel. This is over customization of reports.
Those two simple examples of how not knowing reporting environment and reporting logic present how additional work and frustration is generated for all business intelligence project participants.
